We finally got to Roseland Theater in Portland. Af138 and I parked behind the venue when we saw Joey C., Lazie, & Steve Zing. Talked to them for a little bit and then went inside. Af138 and I got to see the DANZIG Soundcheck. At first it was just Joey, Todd, & Lazie. We saw them play "Brand New God." Then Steve Zing shouted "Mommy" and then they started into "Mommy, Can I Go Out & Kill Tonight." Steve Zing got up onstage and sang the first verse. They sounded great! Glenn appears from the side of the stage w/ the biggest grin shaking his head (I could just hear him thinking....that's not how it's done, but unfortunately he didn't show us his version). Funny moment. From there they went into "Five Finger Crawl" and then "Belly Of The Beast." They sounded tight and loud.
We were downstairs when the show started, but wanted to see AFI because
we'd heard so much about them. We went upstairs to the stage area and we
got to see a couple of their songs. They were good, they have a punk sound
to them. They got the kids started. Good opener.
From there we went backstage and talked w/ the guys. Glenn
was telling me about the vinyl versions of Danzig6. One is
a gatefold cover w/ art by Bisley. The other is a picture
disk of the Martin Emond artwork. I believe
those are from Germany. He also mentioned doing a bunch of
b-sides for some European releases which might include
a Danzig 7inch. He also mentioned the double "live" album
being released by next xmas.
We also talked to Lazie, Joey, & Todd
for awhile. They were playing all kinds of cd's from
Acid Bath to Witchary to Motorhead to new Dr. Dre to
David Bowie. Lazie
gave me some of his bass picks. They have his name printed on one
side and "666" on the other. I talked to Todd about doing
an interview for The7thHouse. That should happen soon.
We also hung out in the Samhain
dressing room talking to London & Steve. I got Steve to sign
my Chyna cd and London to sign my coffin shaped skatedeck.
Right before the Samhain set I got some band pics. Then we went right up to the front of the stage as "Initium" started playing through the speakers. Friggin badass set. The set list was the same as it was for all the other shows, but it was just as powerful as ever. The kids went crazy. They ended the night w/ "The Birthing." Before they got off stage London May was bathed in blood by Steve Zing & Skum. Not only that...they dumped a pillowcase full of feathers on him. It looked like he just sacrificed a thousand chickens. I was able to pick up London's drum stick....all bloody w/ chicken feathers.
DANZIG was up next. Kickass show! They sounded great!!!! They started the set w/ "Brand New God" and went right into "Five Finger Crawl." Cool stuff. There were bodies flying everywhere the entire time. Af138 and I got a few bumps and bruises from the rain of bodies, but it was well worth it! It felt like a battle zone in there trying to get some good pics. Moshers kept falling into the barricade from crowd surfing & then escorted back out to the crowd, just to come right back over the top a few minutes later. Security was pretty cool about working around us.
Since this was the last night of the tour it was time for another prank. This time they got Skum and strapped him to a chair with duct tape. They wheeled him out during "Lilin." There he was, ready to be sacrificed, and there was nothing he could do about it. He tried to roll away but Glenn got him and moved him to the center. They drenched him in blood and he too was feathered. Another Bloody Chicken Man! Great friggen set by DANZIG. They ended the night w/ "Earth AD" as the encore. Af138 and I got most of it on digital & regular film.
Thanks to Glenn, Lazie, Joey, Todd, Steve Zing, London May, Skum, and
all those who we met at the show and also to all of our friends we saw
in San Francisco.
FANGS!!!
